GSFN Coordinators, Dr Hawa Bi Khan (Consultant Digital Health & Sustainability; GSFN Community Global Chair Digital Health, Sustainability and Innovation Management) and Dr Chandran Vinoth Kumar (Group Chief Supply Chain Officer, GNRC Hospitals Ltd.; GSFN Research Global Chair Sustainability, Circular Economy & Affordability) recently presented at the IGEN ENERGATHON on the theme “Delibrations on the UN energy plan of action 2025” with a specific focus on “Energy efficiency in the healthcare sector”.
Dr Renuka Thakore, CEO and founder of GSFN, opened the session by briefing the audience about the GSFN community’s work and commitment to sustainability.
Dr Hawa Bi Khan deliberated on the UN-Energy Plan of Action towards 2025 and presented pain points about healthcare energy efficiency. She gave her insights on the intersection of sustainable energy and healthcare, emphasizing technology’s crucial role in achieving energy efficiency. She highlighted several exemplary hospitals globally expected to lead in energy efficiency by 2025, showcasing innovative approaches seamlessly integrating renewable energy sources and advanced technological solutions. Dr Khan also underscored the importance of equipping healthcare staff with the necessary training and tools to adapt to these changes, ensuring that the transition to greener practices is both smooth and effective. She showcased practical ways in which healthcare can move forward towards energy efficiency.
Complementing Dr Khan’s vision, Dr Vinoth Kumar shared his practical experiences with GNRC Hospitals Limited, illustrating the hospital’s commitment to sustainability through various initiatives. He discussed the implementation of bamboo cladding and circular economy principles, emphasising resource efficiency and waste reduction. GNRC Hospitals have adopted sustainable materials, energy-efficient equipment, and comprehensive waste management programs. Moreover, their HVAC systems are designed to maximize energy efficiency, creating a model for energy efficiency in healthcare settings. This holistic approach reduces the hospital’s environmental footprint and sets a benchmark for future healthcare facilities aiming for sustainability.
